Chicago Heights is known as the “Crossroads of the Nation” where the Lincoln and Dixie Highways intersect, making it an important stop on the Lincoln Highway.
This mural is painted from a well known vintage photograph, depicting the McEldowney Bridge where the Lincoln Highway once crossed Thorn Creek in Chicago Heights, with Henry Ostermann. As the Lincoln Highway Association’s first Field Secretary, Ostermann crossed the bridge at least twice-a-year when inspecting the Lincoln Highway across the country. You will notice a unique element of the mural,
the three-dimensional classic Lincoln Highway “L” sign in stunning color that sharply
contrasts the rest of the work.
